How the test grade calculator works
This tool divides points earned by points possible, then maps the percent to a common US letter grade. Use it for one quiz, test, or assignment. It is not a class average, not a weighted grade calculator, and not a final exam calculator.
How to use the calculator
- Enter points earned, such as 18.
- Enter points possible, such as 20.
- Calculate to see the percent and letter.
- Use the letter grade page if you already have a percent, or grade average if you have several scores.
Worked example
18 out of 20 is 90.0%, which is A- (3.7) on this scale. 40 out of 50 is 80.0%, which is B- (2.7).
Understanding your result
The percent is earned divided by possible, shown to one decimal. The letter uses the same common US scale as the letter grade calculator. Your syllabus can differ.
